Sunday was the 4th of July. When I got up that morning I was really excited about a party that my high school friends were having that evening, or what I thought was that night. After calling one of my best friends, he informed me that I missed the party and the party was the night before. Needless to say I was very disappointed. After about an hour of mulling around my apartment I decided to go on the internet to check my mail. This is when my day took a positive twist.
When I check my mail I had a new friend request on facebook. It was a classmate whom I graduated high school with. His named was Kevin. I immediately granted his request and a few minutes later he messaged me. It turns out he enlisted in the U. S. Army just days after we graduated back in 1992 and is currently stationed in Iraq. He told me he found me when he stumbled over this site. Kevin said he was very impressed to see all that I’ve accomplished over the past 18 years. He told me that he is going use my story to motivate his fellow troops. After chatting a little longer, we said bye, but not before I thanked him for serving our country!
Just think an hour before I received Kevin request I was actually sulking over missing one little party. I think too many people, including myself, forget the real purpose of the 4th of July. Cookouts, beer, and fireworks are great but next year, I urge you to take a few minutes out from celebrating and think of the men and women all over the world serving to protect our country.
Thank you Kevin for a great start to my 4th! Stay safe buddy!
