On Friday, July 23th, I competed in the 37 Annual Narragansett Lions Blessing of the Fleet 10-mile Road Race, held in Narragansett. This has become one of my favorite races to do each year. This 10-mile foot race is one of the oldest and most popular races in Rhode Island. People come from near and far to run this oceanfront course.
This was my twelfth consecutive years competing in this race. This race marked the beginning of my marathon training this year. Usually this race is extremely hot, but this year it was overcast all day which kept the temps in the 70′s, so I went out fast. I also knew that there was a 80 percent of rain so I wanted to try to get as many miles in before the rain came and the roads got slick. I hit the 5-mile mark at 1:17, a great time for me.
The next 2 miles went well and my legs felt great, but then the skies opened up and it poured the rest of the way. I cannot tell you how many huge puddles I stepped in. I crossed the finish line in a time of 2:42;12, just five minutes off my best time for that course, so I was satisfied!
My next race is the CVS Downtown 5K in Providence, RI.
