To whom it may concern,

My name is Jason Pisano; I’m 39 years old from West Warwick, Rhode Island. I graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in Journalism; I worked as a freelance journalist for 11 years. I am also a disabled wheelchair athlete and a motivational speaker. I have completed 51 marathons to date, captured two world titles at the 2005 Cerebral Palsy Games, was a Torch Bearer for the 1996 Olympic Games, and inducted into the New England Wheelchair Athletic Hall of Fame.

Now that I have told you of most of my accomplishments, let me tell you about all of the challenges I face each day of my life. I am confined to a wheelchair, have no use of my arms, and I have a severe speech impediment. I need assistance with almost everything I do such as bathing, eating, going to the bathroom or even just getting out of bed. Although I am severely disabled this has not stopped me from living a very full and fast paced life. I have seen and accomplished more in the 38 years that I have been alive than most have in their entire lifetime.

I was motivated to write my autobiography after seeing the movie “My Left Foot. “. “My Left Foot” is about an Irish man, Christy Brown, who also had cerebral palsy. The major similarity between Christy Brown and me is that we each use the left foot to accomplish tasks for which other people would use their two hands, while our stories differ in that Christy Brown was an exceptional artist and my abilities lie in athletics and writing. Although there are many similarities between Mr. Brown and myself, we grew up in different eras, thus I feel fortunate enough to have many more services and opportunities presented to me.

My story is not a sad one; it’s one of overcoming the odds. I feel telling my story will serve to motivate people to get out there and live life to the fullest because this is the only chance you have. You will see in this book that I am not perfect, but who is? This is the life of Jason Pisano uncut.

The answers seemed especially matter-of-fact, maybe because the interview was done over e-mail.

Maybe because of who was writing.

His name is Jason Pisano. You might have heard of him. He has cerebral palsy and can’t use his arms. He does everything with his left foot, including the marathons. He’s done fifty of them in his wheelchair. He’s made headlines all over the country. He’s been featured in a commercial. He’s carried the Olympic Torch.

And the 38-year-old West Warwick resident is not particularly overwhelmed by any of it.

“Yes, it was very special,” Pisano wrote in describing his 50th marathon, which he completed last weekend in Newport. “It took 17 years of training but I did it.”

Seventeen years. A remarkable story.

Pisano doesn’t write about it in flowery terms – he just keeps going. It’s fitting. As Pisano learned to deal with the immense challenges presented by the cerebral palsy, including a severe speech impediment, he decided he’d never feel sorry for himself.

“I never have wasted time being bitter,” Pisano wrote in a story for the Hartford Courant.

You could say he’s never wasted any time.

Despite the inherent challenges, Pisano graduated high school in the top third of his class. He went on to the University of Connecticut and graduated in 1998. He’s worked for many years as a freelance journalist and is currently doing motivational speaking. He’s also writing his life story.

Every step of the way, he has raced.

He first tried when he was still in high school, at the Downtown 5K. In college, on a spring break trip, he told a friend that he wanted to complete a marathon.

“As we talked, I brought up one goal which intrigued my buddy,” Pisano said. “I told him I always dreamed of completing a marathon. Needless to say the rest is history.”

His first was the 1994 Ocean State Marathon. It was harder than hard.

“Thirteen hours,” he said. “I started in the dark and ended in the dark. Nobody wanted or gave me a shot to come close to finishing but I knew I’d never quit.”

And he never did. He finished the marathon and set his sights on another. His quest to enter the Boston Marathon generated national headlines.

“For the first few years my goal was just to finish,” Pisano said, “but as I became more fit, I began to worry more about getting faster.”

With a team of family and friends supporting him, the sky was the limit. Soon, his passion became a quest. Pisano is good friends with boxer Vinny Paz, who won 50 fights. A goal was born.

“One night we were joking,” Pisano said. “He won 50 fights so I told him I was going to outdo him by one and complete 51 marathons.”

He hasn’t been in any commercials lately and he hasn’t been the subject of the big stories. But he has never stopped.

The Amica Marathon in Newport was No. 50.

“It ranks up there with my best marathons ever,” Pisano said.

Seventeen years after he started, Pisano is now one away. The New York Marathon on Nov. 7 is slated to be the one. Twenty six point two more amazing miles.

“I’d like to thank all my guide runners, friends, family and supporters,” Pisano said. “Without them this dream would have never come true.”

While the New York Marathon will be the end of the quest, it won’t be Pisano’s last. From here on out, he’s planning on doing one marathon a year to benefit the Providence Ronald McDonald House.

And if I e-mail him some time down the line to check in, I’m sure I’ll get the same kind of matter-of-fact answers.

Jason Pisano has cerebral palsy. He has completed 50 marathons.

And he’s still going.

It all started with a “simple conversation” in 1994. Jason Pisano was 22 and a sophomore at the University of Connecticut. It was Spring Break, and he was on a bus bound for Daytona Beach.

During the 24-hour trip, Pisano and good friend Randy Spellman began talking about goals they would like to achieve in life.

Pisano had a few. He had already written a children’s book about a young boy in a wheelchair learning to adapt to a regular school. But he was hoping to find someone who would be willing to publish it. He also wanted to write his autobiography and chronicle the struggles and triumphs he has experienced as a result of being born with cerebral palsy.

Then Pisano tossed out another goal. He told Spellman that he had always dreamt of completing a marathon. That conversation, says Pisano, “ignited a new and exciting chapter in my life.”

On October 30, 1994, Pisano attempted his first 26.2-mile race. Propelling himself backwards in a wheelchair with one foot, he completed the former Ocean State Marathon in about 13 1/2 hours.

But of course he couldn’t stop at just one marathon.

After completing a few more, Pisano decided to shoot for 50.

Then, after hearing former professional boxer Vinny Paz, who is a friend of Pisano, kid that Pisano wanted to complete 50 marathons to match Paz’s 50 career wins in the ring, Pisano added one more to his goal.

Now, after 17 years, Pisano’s mission is nearly complete.

On Sunday, the 38-year-old from West Warwick will tackle his 50th at the Amica Marathon in Newport. Three weeks later, on Nov. 7, he hopes to record No. 51 at the ING New York City Marathon.

“It’s been a long 17 years,” said Pisano, who best communicates by typing on a computer using his big toe. “Many great triumphs, lots of injuries, but most of all I hope I inspired people that Nothing Is Impossible!”

Pisano says he is looking forward to racing in Newport “because I think it will be cool to get my 50th here at home in Rhode Island.”

Displaying his feisty competitive spirit, Pisano adds: “I’m excited to be racing in New York because I have a rival there [wheelchair athlete Bill Reilly], and I’m going to enjoy beating him one last time.”

Pisano has already completed two other marathons this year. In April, he made his 16th straight appearance at the Boston Marathon, finishing in 10 hours, 15 minutes. A month later, he clocked his best time in three years, completing the Cox Sports Marathon in Providence in 7 hours, 32 minutes and 8 seconds.

Training for this weekend’s marathon has been up and down, he says. He had to cut back on his workouts over the past few weeks while his fiancée Nina Garcia, a woman from the Virgin Islands who also has cerebral palsy, and her family were visiting. An old knee injury has flared up this week and he is also battling a cold, but Pisano remains optimistic, saying he hopes “to get a p.r. [personal best] in Newport and just go all out for 51 in NYC!”

Asked if he ever questioned over the years whether he would ultimately achieve his goal, Pisano wrote: “A few times, but if it was easy anyone could have done what I’m doing! I want to be known as the best physically challenged athlete to come out of R.I. I want disabled kids to look at what I did, and say, `I want to be like him.’ “

Once he reaches marathon No. 51, Pisano would like to hold a small gathering in Providence to celebrate his achievement and thank all of his supporters. Any venue interested in hosting Pisano’s party should contact him either by phone at (401) 996-4781,

On Friday, July 23th, I competed in the 37 Annual Narragansett Lions Blessing of the Fleet 10-mile Road Race, held in Narragansett. This has become one of my favorite races to do each year. This 10-mile foot race is one of the oldest and most popular races in Rhode Island. People come from near and far to run this oceanfront course.

This was my twelfth consecutive years competing in this race. This race marked the beginning of my marathon training this year. Usually this race is extremely hot, but this year it was overcast all day which kept the temps in the 70′s, so I went out fast. I also knew that there was a 80 percent of rain so I wanted to try to get as many miles in before the rain came and the roads got slick. I hit the 5-mile mark at 1:17, a great time for me.

The next 2 miles went well and my legs felt great, but then the skies opened up and it poured the rest of the way. I cannot tell you how many huge puddles I stepped in. I crossed the finish line in a time of 2:42;12, just five minutes off my best time for that course, so I was satisfied!

My next race is the CVS Downtown 5K in Providence, RI.

I’ll be in action again this Friday afternoon at 5 p.m., to race in the 39th annual Blessing of the Fleet 10 Mile Road Race in Narragansett!
